Choosing an espresso machine for a coffee shop can seem like an intimidating task, especially if one is opening one for the first time. There are many different brands and manufacturers of espresso machines. At the end of the day, choosing an espresso machine will depend on a variety of factors, based on the needs of the particular shop.
Different factors come into play when choosing an espresso machine. Budget is the first and most important. The espresso machine is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a shop, but it’s important for the business not to overextend itself and take into account what they are able to afford. Other factors that affect the decision include the manufacturer, number of group heads, and whether a used or a new espresso machine would work best.
Choosing an Espresso Machine for a Coffee Shop
Budget
Espresso machines are expensive, and coffee shops have all sorts of different financial situations. Some of the more expensive brands have three group head espresso machines that are over $20,000. Some coffee shops will not be able to afford such a price, but the good news is that there are lots of alternatives.
New/Used
Depending on the budget, a coffee shop owner may decide to go with a used espresso machine as opposed to a new one. When they receive the proper maintenance, a quality espresso machine can last for a long time. If the prices of the used machines look too high, then a quality used espresso machine would be a good choice.
Group Heads
Perhaps a coffee shop owner has their eye on a new Slayer or La Marzocco espresso machine but doesn’t want to pay the price of the three group head options. The good news is that there are one or two group head options available as well, which are going to be much cheaper than some of the other options.
A one group head will not be enough for shops with high traffic and volume, like those with a drive thru. However, for smaller mom-and-pop shops the one group head option could be a great choice.
For shops that go through a lot of espresso that can afford it, another option is getting two two group head machines, as opposed to one three group head machine. A lot of coffee shop owners are choosing this route since there is more space and they can have more baristas working at the same time if they have two machines.
Manufacturer
Lastly, it is also important for a coffee shop owner to decide which espresso machine manufacturer they like the most. Some of the more popular options include La Marzocco, Nuovo Simonelli, Unic, and Slayer. If one is not familiar with the different brands, then it would be wise to ask other coffee shop owners and see which ones they have liked the most.
